Personal Learning Experiences

These are some of the memories I have about my learning experiences starting in middle school and continuing into my professional career.

I remember learning “keyboarding/word processing” in middle school. The teacher was our English teacher and she was teaching us to correctly type on a computer keyboard. We learned how to type by using a computer program and printed worksheet. The program was meant to teach us accuracy and typing technique, it was in a rather dim lit room with 3 or 4 levels of desks (so you are looking down at the teacher and projected screen)…spelling counted and I was a poor speller (ESL).

In college I can recall learning how to use Adobe Illustrator in a digital illustration course. A professor (I still recall his name) was teaching the course. I learned by first understanding what a tool in the software did and then applied that tool to a project. Each project built on the last with the final project being a photo-realistic rendering of an object (I made a lava lamp…it was 2001 or 2002 so don’t judge).  I was learning this as part of my degree and as a standard software in my industry (at the time).

In my current role I have to take annual, mandatory compliance training on a verity of topics. They are all taught the same way, via self-paced (but must be completed by a certain date) online modules presented on our internal learning portal. I learned the information by a combination written, audio, video, and interactive assessment components. This was all information learning.
